- Unique Date Night Ideas in NYC That Aren’t Dinner and a Movie - August 18, 2026
- How I Found the Best Arcade Bar in Brooklyn - August 4, 2026
I haven’t lived in Chelsea very long, but I’m not the kind of person who waits around for a good time to find me. So, I started doing some intense “research”, which basically means I went out and had a great time for several weeks. The goal was to find my new hangout spot, because I like to be a regular, and let me tell you, I found some awesome things to do.
You’ve probably heard of most of these, or maybe you haven’t, but I’ve narrowed it down to spots that don’t drain your wallet too bad, you can come back to them on a weekly or bi-weekly basis without getting too bored, and places that friends or coworkers would also like to go to.
Not to mention a date night or two!
I moved to this neighborhood because of the variety and the vibe, so I’m glad that it definitely met my expectations. Let’s talk about it.
My Top Finds:
- Barcade Chelsea for regular, passive nights out with a lot of fun and without a huge tab
- La Mano Pottery for a fun date night where you get to go home with a souvenir
- Taste Buds Kitchen for some dope skill building you can whip out in the future
- BiteUnite for a unique spin on dinner and dinner dates
- Sid Gold’s Request Room when all you want to do is sing at the top of your lungs and laugh about it later
- High Line Nine for that quieter night out, embodying the artistic Chelsea vibe
- Chelsea Market for unstructured dinners
- The Escape Game New York (Midtown/Chelsea) for high-stakes missions and a fun part 1 to a 2 part evening
- Slate NYC for a huge group
1. Barcade Chelsea

My top pick is Barcade Chelsea. It stands out in my book as an active source of entertainment for a night out, juxtaposed by the traditional bar hopping which is definitely more passive and then becomes more yelling than anything.
It’s a great opportunity for family visiting, friends, coworkers, a birthday night out, or even a date night. They have a ton of vintage games and they’re open every day of the week until 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
They have almost 50 vintage titles with a lot of Premier games from the 1980s and 1990s so you’ll definitely see things that you recognize or maybe things that your parents recognize. Ready for some friendly competition against your buddy? They have NBA Jam Tournament Edition, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, and The Simpsons Arcade Game.
Looking instead for something where you can cheer on a date? Then the classics of Millipede, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaga are there for you. They even have Night Stocker, Time Traveler, and Medieval Madness.
Barcade lands is my top spot because they have so many game options and 24 rotating taps as well as non-alcoholic options, and a bunch of arcade pubfare. But in addition to that, it’s basically everything you could want for an active night out with or without booze, or you can socialize, meander, have an intimate date night with a bit of low-key physicality, and basically take away any pressure, stigma, or high costs associated with a night out in Chelsea.
2. La Mano Pottery (Chelsea)

Ready to recreate that scene from Ghost? Well here you go.
La Mano Pottery is a full-service ceramic studio operating in Chelsea. For a night out with your romantic partner, they have date night pottery classes that are really intimate and relaxed with the perfect ambience and lighting.
Is your mom in town? Then you can do the beginner friendly to our weekend workshops that are more pottery wheel based and don’t have as much cuddling.
They have a lot of opportunities for different workshops and you can fire everything on site and pick things up a few weeks later. I like that you can try different types of classes so it won’t get really boring really quickly, and I especially like that I can take something home at the end of the day.
3. Taste Buds Kitchen (Chelsea)

This is an ideal place for a date night but definitely check whether your date likes sushi first.
This is a sushi making Master Class and they have adult date nights and evening workshops that are very hands-on, teaching things like the chemistry behind sushi rice seasonings, how to properly cut raw fish and vegetables, and using bamboo mats.
I like that it’s a BYOB-friendly place so I can actually bring my own drinks if I have a preferred beverage with my sushi (which, yes, I do, thank you for asking) and obviously you get to eat everything you make at the end.
This is something you can do more than once, but it’s not going to be a weekly activity because it can be very expensive.
4. BiteUnite (Near Chelsea)

At 247 W 30th St is BiteUnite Cooking Classes. I started taking cooking classes when I realized I couldn’t subsist on Ramen and I had to figure out how to function as an adult on my own.
This class was a lot of fun for me because it took everything down to the bare minimum, starting from scratch, and learning how to thin and cut dough into things like taglia tella sheets and pristine fettuccine. I was able to learn about dough for pasta and sauce for pasta completely from scratch, making things like mortar and pestle basil pesto and slow simmering bolognese.
And for any fans of the show Landman, I hope you hear “It’s a bolognese” and “call it ‘spaghetti’ one more time…” when reading this.
Plus, you get to eat everything you make at the end of the night so, now that I think about it, it’s basically an adult home ec class that you pay for.
Still a lot of fun and I would highly recommend it, but once you’ve done it, it’s over, you’re not going to get a lot of variety in the types of classes available for repeat experiences.
5. Sid Gold’s Request Room

Every Friday night in the group chat the same person recommends karaoke. It always amuses me that the person who’s the least talented singer in the group is the most in favor of karaoke.
That said, Sid Gold’s Request Room is where it’s at for karaoke. They have a live piano bar set up with the classic cocktail lounge and you can submit your requests to The Pianist for things like rock, pop, and soul. They have microphones so you can sing by yourself or with a group and you don’t have to book anything ahead of time.
It is a two drink minimum though so plan accordingly.
6. High Line Nine

If you were looking for the premier art vibe, then High Line Nine is it. At 507 W 27th, it has a gallery with walkable collections that are constantly rotating so you’ll find a lot of different art installations whenever you go.
It’s free to enter so you don’t have to worry about cost, it’s open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. so it’s great to access on weekends or right after work as something everyone can enjoy, and you get to see a lot of mixed media photography, sculpture, and modern painting all in one place.
If you’re a huge art fan and you really want to spend the day immersing yourself in the collections, they have a European Cafe so you can get a glass of wine or espresso to really lubricate the conversation about paint textures or styles.
7. Chelsea Market

A lowkey evening can be spent at Chelsea Market. We all know it because of the National Biscuit Company Factory and it’s open late until 10:00 p.m. so it’s perfect for a late afternoon or early evening meet up.
I have used this venue to meet up with friends for a more casual kind of bites and socialization night but I’ve also used it for a date night when we can’t decide what we want to eat because I can grab artisanal tacos at Los Tacos No. 1 while my date can get fresh hand-pulled noodles at Very Fresh Noodles.
It’s a fun place to eat and shop but it’s not going to have a lot of activity and entertainment.
8. Narrative Puzzle Adventure: The Escape Game New York (Midtown/Chelsea)

As someone who is claustrophobic I really didn’t think I’d be down with escape rooms when they were first growing in popularity but it turns out, I love them. So, this nearby option gives you a chance to adult roleplay outside of a Comic-Con, stepping into a themed room of your choosing and trying to solve clues together.
It’s all pretty collaborative and everyone has to work together so hopefully there’s no one in your group you can’t stand.
Now, if you do this regularly enough you might run out of rooms and then it gets boring.
Even if you don’t do it regularly, I wouldn’t recommend this as your only night out activity unless you have limited time to spend with your friends. For those nights where you want to get together but you have an early morning so you can’t be out drinking all night, this can be a great option, limiting your social time to around an hour or two.
Barring that though, this is a fun way to break the ice as a starting activity before you head somewhere else and start drinking and chatting.
9. Slate NYC

Slate NYC is a massive 16,000-square-foot lounge. It’s in the heart of Chelsea so the commute is short.
You enter the main lounge by going down the 20-ft indoor slide and who doesn’t love that except maybe the one date who got invited and is wearing a mini skirt. Once you get inside you have a full kitchen which is amazing as the night progresses and you’re really craving those loaded nachos or Artisan sliders.
I love that they have bowling lanes, giant Connect Four (for some reason I rock at giant sized versions of board games), ping pong tables, and foosball. It’s basically an oversized version of a dorm lobby or rec room but it also comes with the noise and the crowds of a dorm lobby or rec room.
If you go on a weekend or Friday night you’re going to be waiting against a sea of people to get a drink.
Explore Your Options and Have Fun!

If you’re looking for something to do in Chelsea other than sit and drink at a bar, you have so many great options but not every option will work regularly or with different groups.
I love the idea of Escape rooms and Sushi Master classes, basically anything that teaches me a new skill or lets me take home a souvenir, but those only last as one off opportunities (or two or three depending on your dating routine) and the cost can build if you try to do them with multiple groups.
That’s why my go-to for a regular activity is Barcade, where drinks are easy to come by, games allow you to flip back and forth from one person or group or space to another, and everything’s a much more relaxed atmosphere conducive to weekly evenings out.
