- Cabeau vs TRTL Travel Pillow Compared - June 25, 2025
If you are a frequent traveler or are a passenger princess like me, you already know the importance of having a quality travel pillow. On short flights or drives, a rolled sweatshirt might do the trick. But I’m talking about the long trips, where you’re desperate for real rest and need something better. There are several pillows out there to choose from, and I have tried multiple ones before finding my perfect match – the Cabeau Evolution X. In this article, I will tell you everything I love or don’t love about the Cabeau travel pillow and compare it to others on the market. I’ll also give you some tips on choosing the right pillow for your travel style, plus alternatives worth considering. After reading, hopefully you will have a clearer idea of which travel pillow best suits your style and your needs.
Top Choice: Cabeau Evolution X
The Cabeau Evolution X is a travel pillow that immediately caught my eye when I saw it online. It has a unique look and shape compared to other pillows, so I just had to try it for myself. It highlights an ergonomic design that is meant to keep your head upright and supported during the entire time of use. As a side sleeper, I have always had problems sleeping upright, especially on crammed flights where there is no place to rest your head except on a random stranger. The Evolution X has a few features that separate it from the rest of the pillows I have tried in the past:

- Completely Adjustable: This travel pillow has three areas to adjust in order to get a perfect fit to your neck. This is important because any basic neck pillow will not fit your neck correctly, allowing your head to move around during upright sleep. When your head moves around, that’s when you wake up with a terrible crick in your neck or have back pain for the next few days, which is already likely after long car or plane rides.
- Material: This is by far the best material I have felt on a travel pillow. It is like a jersey sheet feel, allowing heat to escape. Some pillows have a blanket feel, which feels nice and soft until you are sweating on a tiny plane. It has memory foam inside, so it is super plush and soft. Bonus points because the cover is removable, necessary for a person who spills everything (me).
- Breathability: There are two plastic vents on the sides to help with airflow, which I found very helpful on my flight. I was concerned that having the pillow tight around my neck would make me feel stuck and hot, but that was not the case at all.
- Support: The support of the Evolution X has been the best from the travel pillows I’ve tried. It honestly does not allow your head to tilt in any direction. I know it sounds suffocating, but it is actually so comfortable, even for a typical side sleeper.
Since no product is ever perfect, here are some areas I think the Cabeau Evolution X could improve on, after multiple uses:
- Packability: This is a big factor in whether you should get this pillow or not. If you do not have a lot of extra space, you may find it hard to bring it on your trip. The first time I used it, I only had a small carry-on suitcase and a backpack. It did not fold easily in either, and it was really hard to squeeze back into my backpack with no legroom on my flight. I could have strapped it on the outside of my bag, but it is still a bigger pillow that gets in the way sometimes.
- Overall Look: Honestly, my least favorite part about this pillow is how it looks in use. It looks like a neck brace rather than a pillow. This was something I had to get over since it was so comfortable and supportive, but I do think they could work on the design. It mainly looks this way because of the plastic vents on the side, but those provide most of the support for the neck, so it is worth it.
- Cost: The Evolution X is around $49-60, mid-range for the travel pillow world. There are pillows that are more affordable, but with less support. I will say this is the most affordable pillow I have found with this much support. Others are in the $100 range for this type of quality.
Comparisons
I didn’t find the Cabeau overnight. After trying several different pillows first, here are my thoughts on some popular ones:
Basic U-Shaped Neck Pillow
This pillow is best if you do not travel often, do not want to spend a lot, or need a last-minute solution. You can find them at every airport kiosk or probably at a grocery store. I personally would avoid this pillow at all costs, just because it doesn’t offer much support for your neck at all. However, if you really don’t go many places or travel long distances, I could see this working for you.

Pros
- Affordable
- Easy to pack
- Very Accessible
Cons
- Little to no neck support
- Often, a hot material
- One-Size-Fits-All
- Risk of severe neck pain
Trtl Neck Pillow
These pillows range from $60 to $90 based on different styles. It is more like a scarf than a pillow. The Original one I got ended up being $70 from Amazon. I was expecting more at that price, as I wasn’t really impressed with the support it gave me. Not to mention the hot fleece material, which is the cheapest option from Trtl. I really don’t understand the hype on these pillows, except for the fact that they fold flat.

Pros
- Folds flat
- Adjustable to your neck (wrap around)
Cons
- Expensive
- Fleece material is very hot
- Did not like the wrap feeling around my neck
- Only supports one side of your neck at a time
- Requires readjusting
Microbead Pillows
These were really popular many years ago. They are lightweight and squishy, filled with tiny beads. These pillows don’t hold up for very long, though, so it may not be the best option if you are frequently traveling.

Pros
- Cheap
- Light and moldable
- Easy to find
Cons
- Not supportive
- Beads compress quickly
- Material can trap heat
- Short lifespan (mine flattened after just a few trips)
Inflatable Travel Pillows
Some travelers rave over inflatable pillows. Even my dad has one, which he swears by. I can see how it can be great since it packs completely flat, but I hate how it feels when it’s blown up. It isn’t plush like a pillow at all.

Pros
- Incredibly compact
- Lightweight
- Adjustable firmness
Cons
- Can feel plasticky and uncomfortable
- Risk of popping or leaking
- Doesn’t offer the same plush support as memory foam
How to Choose the Best Travel Pillow for you
The “best” of anything can be pretty relative and is highly dependent on your travel style. Here are a few things to consider:
- Trip Length – if you take shorter flights, a simple, lightweight pillow may be fine for you. For longer international flights or long road trips, you will need more support from pillows like the Evolution X.
- Packing Style – If you’re like me and only fly with a carry-on since it’s already so expensive to fly, you will need something compact like the Trtl or inflatable pillows. If you do have checked luggage or are just traveling in the car, a bulkier pillow like the Cabeau won’t be a problem.
- Sleeping Style – Side sleepers: You are going to want firm support that keeps your head upright. Back sleepers (like my husband) will sleep with any pillow, but a memory foam one is preferable. Stomach sleepers: You’re out of luck…
- Budget – Under $20: U-shaped or microbead pillows. $40-60: Cabeau Evolution X or similar. $70+ Trtl or premium memory foam pillows.
Extra Travel Comfort Tips
A few extra things that have helped me get more comfortable during traveling on top of a good travel pillow:
- Eye mask – Helps block out the sun or cabin lights for better sleep. Also great when the stranger next to you won’t close their plane window.
- Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs – I am the one with the crying baby, so for that I do apologize. However, I am so sorry if you forgot your noise-canceling devices. These are flying essentials to me. Even if the plane is quiet, I still have to block out that loud airplane noise.
- Light blanket or sweatshirt – I can never tell if I will be hot or cold on a plane. Either way, I get the best sleep when I can be at a comfortable temperature with a blanket.
Final Verdict
After trying multiple travel pillows, the Cabeau Evolution X is the clear winner for me. It checks all the boxes for comfort, support, and breathability – especially for side sleepers like me. The downsides (bulkiness, look, mid-range price) are worth overlooking if you value actually sleeping on a flight.
If you prioritize packing light or don’t travel often, you might want to stick with a simpler option like the Trtl (at a high price point) or a basic U-shaped pillow. Just know you are at risk of neck or back pain if your pillow has less support.
At the end of the day, the “best” pillow is the one that fits your specific travel needs. For me, the Cabeau Evolution X has earned a permanent spot in my tightly-packed carry-on.
