My Cabeau Evolution X Neck Pillow Review: Will This Hold Up On a Long Flight?

My Cabeau Evolution X Neck Pillow Review: Will This Hold Up On a Long Flight?
Latest posts by Better Wander Team (see all)

As a frequent traveler, I am always looking for new products to improve my overall comfort on long flights. One thing that has not changed much over the years is the travel neck pillow. I am so over the basic, U-shaped pillow that does absolutely nothing to provide decent sleep on a plane (if that is even possible). I have tried several different neck pillows over the years, but recently found the Cabeau Evolution X pillow.

The Cabeau Evolution X is a travel pillow unlike any other I have seen, featuring an ergonomic design and a customizable fit that is the only like its kind on the market. I decided to take this on my recent flight from Tennessee to Louisiana to see if it helped me get some well-needed rest, without my neck bobbing around the entire time.

Here is just a quick review of what I thought about the pillow overall, with details to follow! Rankings on various aspects of the travel pillow, with 10 being the best:

  • Ergonomic Design: 9/10
  • Overall Comfort: 9/10
  • Cooling Ability: 8/10
  • Quality of Product: 9/10
  • Packing-Friendly: 5/10
  • Appearance in Use: 3/10
  • Overall: 7/10

First Impressions:

When I received the pillow, the first thing I noticed was the softness of the material. It feels like a jersey sheet, allowing for a soft feel with extra breathability. Some travel neck pillows are made of a velvet material that is very soft, but gets very hot during use. The Cabeau Evolution X kept my neck cool on the entire flight, which is one of the most important aspects to me in a travel pillow.

This pillow has three different areas to adjust, so it did take me a while to get it to a place that was comfortable. The side pieces have plastic vents for support and breathability, which make the pillow very stiff in the front. This may be a problem for people who are claustrophobic because it is meant to keep your neck in place. I can definitely see how it could make someone feel “stuck”, especially while wearing it on an crammed airplane.

With the interesting, new design, it is 100% neck-support focused, which is great. However, I do not think it is the most appealing to wear. The complete wrap-around aspect and plastic elements remind me of a neck collar or neck brace. If you care about how you look around strangers on a flight, this may not be the option for you. I definitely believe that other brands will start to see how effective this pillow is and start designing theirs like this, so it may be a more popular look soon, hopefully. I think the amount of support and comfort the Evolution X offers trumps any other pillow I have ever seen or tried, so if I have to sacrifice appearance, I will to get maximum comfort.

Design and Features:

Cabeau Evolution X Neck Pillow

The main features of the Evolution X travel pillow is the customizable fit, which I found to be very helpful since I do have a smaller neck. This pillow is adjustable three ways, as opposed to your standard one-size-fits-all neck pillow, which tends to just slip off over time on a flight.

  • Circumference Adjustment: A hidden zipper at the back of the pillow reveals a strap that can be adjusted to change the pillow’s circumference, allowing for a snug fit around your neck. The first time I used this pillow, I did not realize this was a feature! Once I found it, it made the fit around my neck so much more comfortable. Ensuring a snug fit it what will prevent your neck from tilting during travel, which causes strain and pain, especially after very lengthy flights.
  • Height Adjustment: The pillow’s lobes can be shifted to accommodate different neck lengths, providing optimal support. I played around with the height for a good bit to get it in the best position. You can tilt the sides up, down, inwards and outwards, so there are multiple different positions to adjust to your needs.
  • Front Closure: A pull cord in the front helps secure the pillow in place to prevent unwanted movement during sleep.

Ergonomic Support

The Evolution X is engineered to prevent the head from tilting more than 10° in any direction, a feature that significantly reduces the risk of neck pain. For context, any of your common U-shaped neck pillows still allow your neck to tilt up to 60°, applying up to 60 pounds of pressure on your neck! This makes so much sense as to why I was in pain after a long flight. With the design of the Evolution X, my neck remained completely upright during my flight, minimizing strain on neck muscles. I am a side sleeper, so not waking up with my neck completely sideways was a win in my book. I felt very supported, but not restricted at the same time. I also really enjoyed the memory foam, which provided consistent support and did not lose its shape over time.

Breathability

If you have flown at any point in your life, you know that an airplane is not the coolest place on earth. Adding a few passengers next to you, a delayed flight, and a tiny air vent, you are destined to be sweating at some point. The material of this pillow is so breathable, and the two vents on the side of it are perfect for letting air flow to and from your neck. I think this is one of my favorite aspects of the pillow!

Practicality

I am grateful that it has a removable cover, so I can wash away all of those airport germs after each use, which is necessary after traveling. One thing about this pillow that is not very practical is its portability. The firm plastic sides meant for support are a bit bulkier than the average neck pillow, so it takes up more space in a bag. On this trip, I was packing light, so I found it difficult to find a spot to squeeze it in. I did see later that Cabeau does offer a separate travel case that could strap on your suitcase or bag instead of cramming it in your luggage, so I will probably look into that. I wish it came with it automatically, though, since it is a hassle to carry around. Although the sides are a bit bulky, I think the memory foam on the rest of the pillow still allows for great folding ability, if you have the space for it.

Comparisons:

Typical U-shaped Neck Pillow

Honestly, I don’t know who actually buys these anymore unless it’s a pillow emergency. This type of pillow is not going to give you the support you need, but it is the most affordable option and available anywhere.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Easy to pack
  • Very Accessible

Cons

  • Little to no neck support
  • Often a hot material
  • One-Size-Fits-All
  • Risk of severe neck pain

Cabeau Evolution S3

Evolution S3® Neck Pillow

This is a step up from your common neck pillow. With higher sides and a seat strap system, you are getting more support for not much of a higher price. I did not particularly enjoy the seat strap system; it was just more work than I was interested in doing. If you are a naturally hot person like me, though, I would steer away from this type of pillow.

Pros

  • Seat strap to keep your neck in place
  • Raised side support
  • Very compact and comes with travel pouch

Cons

  • Neck can still drop forward
  • Can interfere with headphones
  • Not meant for cooling

Cabeau Evolution Cool

Evolution Cool Neck Pillow

A step up from the S3 would be the Evolution Cool, which is mainly meant to keep you cool. It has vents all the way around the pillow, as opposed to the Evolution X, which only has two. I definitely think this is one of my favorites since it keeps me cool, but it is not as soft as the Evolution X. It still has higher supports on the sides, but not the best system to keep your neck in place. It is also the most expensive from the Cabeau lineup, which is not that appealing.

Pros

  • Multiple Breathable Vents
  • High Side Supports

Cons

  • Most Expensive Cabeau Option
  • Not the most supportive pillow

Cabeau Evolution X

Of all of the Cabeau options, the Evolution X is a blend of both the Evolution S3 and the Evolution Cool. It still has the vents for breathability, but it is not as breathable as the Evolution Cool. It does have better support than the S3 without the hassle of a seat strap, which I appreciate!

Pros

  • Three-way adjustability
  • Two vents for airflow
  • Ergonomic design for 360 degree support
  • Soft and breathable material

Cons

  • Bulky to pack
  • Appearance
  • May feel claustrophobic

Final Thoughts

The Cabeau Evolution X is the only one of its kind. I love that I can adjust it however much I want, and the support it gave me on the flight was unlike any other travel pillow on the market. I did see the entire Cabeau product lineup in the airport as I was traveling, so look for it next time you fly! I think the Evolution X is an excellent addition to my travel must-haves, and I am excited to take it on my next journey.
